I recall some writer at RS (Jann Wenner, maybe?) saying it was unlistenable, while some writer at Cream (Lester Bangs, probably) proclaimed it genius. Though I've heard Velvet Underground and Lou Reed's solo stuff, I was never a big fan.
All that was before I learned of the stranglehold the tribe has on the music industry.
