Most people don't really know what Satanism is.

They think fools wearing inverted pentagrams constitutes Satanism. It doesn't.

They think the study or practice of the occult is Satanism. It isn't.

Satanism is the ritual adoration and invocation of Satan, and the willful, deliberate practice of evil as a spiritual sacrifice to Satan.

The European witches of the Renaissance period were Satanists according to their sworn confessions, in which they claimed that they invoked Satan to visible presence at their sabbat meetings, and they entered their names in his black book, forming a pact in which they swore to do evil in Satan's name. Of course, their confessions were extracted under torture and are thus suspect.

There were also Satanists among the degenerate bourgeois class in France at the end of the 19th century, as Huysmans' 1891 novel Là-Bas depicts. Some members of Dashwood's 18th century English Hellfire Club may have been Satanists, although most of its activities appear to have been mere religious and sexual posturing.

A true Satanist commits acts of evil, with full awareness that they are evil, in return for tangible benefits such as wealth or career advancement granted to him or her by Satan.

Magic is not inherently Satanic, nor is it necessary to practice magic in Satanism, which is the worship of evil. Satanism is a form of religion in which Satan, as the embodiment of evil, is adored and served.

Satan is not Lucifer, and Satanism is not Luciferianism. They are two completely different things.
