could implement a link translator that replaces the shorts/ with watch?v= to avoid that shitty auto-advancing player.

Already done in the expando only (js dynamically does it client side) where is plays the shorts through the regular embed player.
The reason why it only applies to expando is because Poal doesn't modify links submitted by poalrs.
