I don't think he over reacted. The roided out gorilla was chimping out on him. A single punch to the back of the head would end his life. They tried tasers several times. This guy was extremely violent and was not going to go down any other way. He made this the only option.
One cop was already unconscious, if the second cop become that way his or his partner guns could be taken. So yes they had every right.
