It is a bit surprising that the paint is applied to the cans after they are formed, not to a flat sheet. But due to the way the aluminum is drawn, it has to be this way.
By the way, the reduction in the size of the cans was not done to conserve aluminum, it was "down-sizing," which is the selling of a smaller product for the same price. Most of what we buy has been "down-sized" over the years. It doesn't save any aluminum, because the people who drink the beverage simply drink two instead of one.
Soda cans have been 12 ounces for over 40 years
These cans are the same size as they always have been. I have seen new cans that are smaller due to inflation. $1 sodas will not be profitable soon at the rate things are going.
