I found out a short time ago that that is the way they dispose of a non laying queen.
They also drive out the drones for the winter. Hive life is harsh, man.
It is interesting that only asian bees can do this. The hornets have learned their chemical signature now and won't often attack an asain bee hive. They know they will get killed and they move on. I have thought of trying to import asain bees if the hornets get established here in WA state.
