The first assault rifle was the StG44 "Sturmgewehr", literally translating to "storm rifle", whereas "assault rifle" is a more accurate localization. Defining features are box mag fed, intermediately caliber, and select fire.

Gun manufacturers have called their rifles that for decades... It was first mentioned describing the StG-44. Do you have a problen with that?
