I think crying is important, like coughing, etc. But if a person is crying all the time, it means they've got lots of issues they haven't resolved, just like if they're coughing all the time. A father should have his shit together already so he doesn't have a reason to cry. So the science here makes sense. A woman is looking for the best father, not just a male who isn't repressed regarding crying.
Crying is a way to reduce stress. I see it as people who cry too much are imbalanced people with poor ways to cope with their emotions. They're unstable.
If you hit a tragic event where the amount of stress is unbareable, that's okay to use crying to release it. Hearing your parent just died or losing a great pet/best friend is not something most people are prepared to cope with immediately. As long as you aren't milking it and using your bad situation to milk sympathy from others it's fine.
Crying about day-to-day situations or things that most people go through tells me you have no idea how to cope with easy situations laid before you.

There's a difference between a lone stoic tear and ugly crying.
Women need stability from a man, displaying instability is going to disgust her old lizard brain. Proverbially if you were a house she sees this as a leaky rough, and she can't fix it.
A lone stoic tear at a funeral or wedding or after a major terror attack is only going to humanize you show your restraint and demonstrate that you have emotions, she will characterize you a bit though unless you're with a psycho the worst consequence is that she'll probably try to talk more about her feelings, this is a catch 22 and will evolve into new shit tests though.
If you sob or worse she will lose her image of you as emotionally stable and independent.
I have a leaky tear duct and have genuinely had to deal with girlfriends thinking I'm crying and shit testing me over it. I have a rule to never let a woman I want to sit to my left. The bad tear duct is on the left and also I'm betting on a subconscious association between driving a car and authority/risk dynamics.
