Amusing.

Many of these techniques do not take into account that your opponent really doesn't want to die and he'll probably not stop moving after you parry his blade, allowing you to cut him twice and stab him once.

Most knife defense stuff you'll see is trash. It needs to be tested, over and over. There's this great MMA fighter named Travis (IDR last name) who took like 200+ videos of knife attacks and analyzed them. He was able to determine that about 80% of knife attacks will begin with the attacker reaching out to grapple you with their off hand. The most likely attack from the knife will be a straight stab to the lower abdomen, this accounts for about 1/2 of the stabbings he analyzed.

So he took the data from the analysis and got some practice knives, and went into his gym and labbed it out. Tried all kinds of different techniques to figure out what works and what doesn't. He discovered that most of the typical disarming techniques you see are absolute nonsense which require a polite, compliant student in order to demonstrate. For example, a common disarm technique involves grabbing the opponent's weapon-wrist and then elbowing/striking the top of their hand, knocking their grip open. This doesn't work if the guy is really trying to hold onto the knife. He even has his partner hold the knife, grabs his wrist, braces it against his knee, and starts dropping HARD elbows down onto his knife-hand... and the partner starts laughing, saying "This is so stupid, go ahead, harder".

There are some good fundamental principles in this video though- like in the beginning when the narrator describes how knife-fighting is basically like boxing, but "for keeps". He gives perfect footwork advice, advises that you keep moving constantly. And never, EVER cross your feet- why not? Because when your feet are crossed, you are off balance and out-of-stance. If your opponent times a punch or a stab at this moment, you have nowhere to move, so you're eating the strike. It'll also take a second for you to uncross your feet and get back into your stance- and in fighting, especially something like KNIFE fighting, every second could be the difference between "going home to your family" and "being punched full of holes".

That's good info. Do you have the video of this Travis guy demonstrating his techniques? It would be interesting to see.

Here's the ad for the bigger series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0Y6YG2BfE4&t=106s

If you give an email address, you can watch the series for free. And it's fantastic. Nothing better than hard sparring and analyzing actual attacks to find the reality.

Cool, I might check it out.
