Christianity states that they failed their God. They were meant to be the set apart people, the chosen to spread the word amongst the nations, instead they failed, they fell to false gods, and committed abominations in the sight of God. This is why the old testament is so crucial, it shows that man cannot save himself or themself collectively. Instead Jesus Christ must come to us in the flesh, to show the error in our ways, and ultimately show the sacrifice it takes to save our dreary souls.
While I don't disagree with what you said, I think it's important to realize that the system that they continue to cling to was rendered moot by the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Now, not only are they a failed people as you state, but they are beyond that. They are anti-Christ. They have gone from failing their God to being openly hostile.
