Even then, why would one not think "oh shit, my accelerator pedal is stuck, better pop it in neutral and apply the brake"?

The first time learning how to drive I was confused. If you are teaching someone to drive from absolute scratch make sure they practice repeatedly and solidly know where the gas and the brake pedal are located.
