You only have to be in a situation like that to know how helpless you are. The waves don't have to be big at all, get near rocks and you're fucked. You won't see shit, sharp jagged things all around you and no way to know which part of you is going to get slammed into it. Even with full scuba gear you'd be fucked unless you were deep enough to avoid the worst of the wave energy.
