I've met many people who were homeless for a short bit. Honestly you'll survive. Creating situations where you might harm someone and stealing from people who may end up in just as bad a situation as you for it because you're too prideful to go camping is no excuse.
And you say you have a family. My grandfather was an orphan at 9, but his mother died at 3 and his father had a hard enough time supporting himself, so my grandfather bounced around the home of family friend to family friend. Many people from that generation did that (depression era). If you have community your kids don't have to be homeless with you for the month you figure shit out. And despite that hardship during the depression people didn't have to steal from each other. They knew they could handle life's bumps with stride and that being dishonest would just make things worse.
Homeless people in the US today have extensive social programs available to them. In NYC homeless are not placed in hotels paid for by NYC taxpayers. They all qualify for public assistance cash and food stamps, several hundred dollars each month and if they stay in the shelters for a few months they get free subsidized housing. The people doing armed robberies are fucked up crackheads or just horrible people.
