When a novel like 50 Shades comes out, it gets bought up in massive numbers by the publishers to ship at low cost to the booksellers, long before anyone has ever had the chance to read it. Then the New York Times sees that, wow, who could have guessed, what a best-seller! Then the news and the talk shows come on and discuss this scandalous new bestseller, why, all the bored housewives are reading it, and you don't want to be left out! Soon millions are convinced to get it on the basis that millions of others supposedly read it, and that many people can't be wrong. A portion buy in to it, but many are left wondering what the hype was about. It works this way in every major marketing op, from music to mini skirts.
Whites did not practice wife beating. Even back in the middle ages, it was a crime.
