People were definitely a lot poorer and had almost no social mobility, but they worked a lot less and were a lot happier than we are today.

Aren't modern citizens?

Modern citizens are not bound by chains, but by debt.

The peasants had a few more freedoms than slaves. They could choose not to work at a particular job, although getting another line of work was next to impossible. They could go to live somewhere else, although saving the money to do this was nearly impossible. They could marry the person they picked to marry, although the selection in a village was not great. They got to keep some of their income for themselves.

I was watching a mini documentary on a peasant uprising. You don’t really hear about this one cause the peasants were slaughtered. I don’t remember the time or anything I just remember watching it thinking oh ok I wonder what they wanted. What they were gonna do when they overthrew the king. Then they got to the castle and all died

Yes the peasants revolt in 1381 England.

remember they didnt have bootstraps to pull themselves up by back then.

The clergy didn't have a death penalty, just exile?

Well, that's a lovely incentive for psychopaths to join.
