Yep, people have injured or even killed themselves goofing around with them.
Right, even though there is no projectile, there is still an explosion occurring in the weapon. The kinetic force from the explosion is guided out through the barrel. If someone shoots a blank at you from like 3 feet away, the air displacement will strike you. It can cause bruising and tissue damage at the least, and it can break bones or rupture organs at the worst.
It's sort of like those "air guns" (idk the proper term for them) used to slaughter cattle, except those fire an extremely high pressure burst of air without the use of a combustible substance like gunpowder.
