I don't think anyone can predict how any of this will work or affect anyone yet. If you look at the chyna virus, it was engineered and include an aids delivery mechanism all of which was supposed to target the best known way to propagate a bio weapon, which is through the lungs. And yet, it turned out to be fairly benign. It may actually turn out to be really difficult to actually engineer something that is actually effective and wipes out a whole town.
On the other hand, a kid in a basement my accidentally generate a kind of airborne prion that spreads through our respiratory system and kill the entire planet.
Your point is valid though. Just proposing other potential ways of thinking about how many possible outcomes we are exposed to.
