This whole stopping any time a person wants to cross is actually very new in my area.
Oh, its law in norway. They have the right of way at any crossing except when there are lights.
Like theyre still putting special signs up at the crossings where you are expected to stop if someone is waiting to cross. And they pretty much only do it in left leaning areas. Otherwise its still as it was. A crossing is a guideline of where to expect people to be crossing, but you dont have to stop if theyre waiting. Unless its a stop sign. But you have to stop there anyway.
Around here it was more "if you want cars to stop for you do it at a light or stop sign". There werent really any labeled crossing for pedestrians other than at lights or stop signs. And if there were you didnt have to stop at them if someone was waiting to cross. It was more of a warning to keep and eye out for people already crossing. But now its becoming you stop if there are people waiting at any form of designated crossing other than a stop light.
But its really very new. Last few years. Maybe 10 absolute max. More like 5.
The whole heavy prioritization of pedestrian, bycicle, and public transportation is all a very left leaning idea in general. Which is not to say that right wingers just wanna run people over. But the left is pushing these priorities because they literally dont want people driving their own cars. Anything they can do to encourage other forms of travel they are doing. Which is why in areas like mine its a left right issue as to where the signs get put up.
