Not that this has anything to do with stateside regulations, just an interesting tidbit. Russia, China, Australia and then the United States are the top four rankings in gold production I believe. I think it really drops when you get to the US ranking. Australia probably has the easiest pickings for the recreational miner with the use of a metal detector.
