I always wondered about that, and given Exodus, their behavior makes a lot more sense now. They essentially gave up a life of luxury to become poor again.
After they got uppity, their only option was to return to Babylon; but Moses utilized the opportunity to invent the Levite, and usurp that original mandate they had already forgotten.

Babylon was not their origin, but their only ally after they usurped divine authority.
Few have ears as yet to hear of this as yet.
