Probably a lot of them don't survive, just as lots of newly hatched sea turtles don't make it to the water. After all, the parents only have to replace themselves plus a bit more for the adults who didn't procreate, to maintain the population.

Geese only take 28 days to hatch, have a clutch of eggs around 10, maybe 5 hatch. If even one survives it was a success. If not try again.
