Many States are "free to work" States so they can fire you for anything EXCEPT being a member of a "suspect classification" or if the termination violates a federal or State law against retaliatory termination.
Also referred to as "Right to Work" states. It's absurd, because what it really boils down to is "right for employer to terminate with extreme prejudice and no explanation required".
I'd wager most people who are being terminated over this kind of shit, people who got fired over not wanting to wear masks in working conditions where it was extremely uncomfortable (or even dangerous), and any other "troublemakers" get the official documentation saying "[Company], effective on [date], is terminating the employment of [poor bastard] without reason." And that's it.
It's brilliant for employers. Makes them practically untouchable on a small, micro level- they don't have to worry about individual employees suing them over abuses, because they can just terminate them "without reason" and now a lawyer would have to prove that the termination was retaliatory or w/e, which is extremely difficult.
I wonder what color most of these states trend towards? My guess would be blue. I know the red/blue business is mostly nonsense, but it does usually align wih expectations.
My state is "right to work" but also has a "good faith" contracts clause in its constitution. So while they can theoretically fire me for any reason, they can't terminate the employment contract arbitrarily or capriciously--it has to be done in good faith.
You know what's fucking crazy about "right to work?" Your employer can make you work 24 hours straight (as long as you get an hour break every 8 hours and fire you if you refuse to do it.
But what else would you expect from a nation whose god is its money?
