There's a dude running carbon nanotubes in fuel and using light instead of a spark plug to ignite the mixture (single cylinder test engine not real application) . stratified injection is pretty cool stuff but you have to play around with geometries and stuff (pointing a GDI injector straight at the spark plug or the CCIV precombustion chamber) Hydrocarbons become an issue with emissions regulations though and typically are addressed with more expensive catalytic converters (VW TFSI I think is the modern example but it only runs stratified in certain conditions)
