It is common for people to shoot camping size bottles that are empty and they make a surprisingly big bang I hear. A good size cylinder can level a house and the neighbors as you can see in the news, it just blows them into splinters, they don't burn. A proper aerosol bomb is damn near impossible as we learned from the Christmas Bombing 8 months ago.
We used to shoot those propane torch sized tanks when I was a kid. Hit it square on and a .22 would pierce it. No bang tho we could light the residual gas.
Friend of mine that told me about it was shooting a .308 and I think he told me it took a particular type of bullet, maybe fmj of a particular alloy. I don't remember, it was years ago. He was relaoding his own ammo and casting bullets so maybe he used something "sparky." I'm certain he was shooting a 308 though because he said he shot it at 200 yds so he had to use his competition rifle.
We were shooting empty tanks. The old man would have tanned our hides (they still did that when I was a kid) if we had wasted a full tank.
I see what you mean, tho. Soft .22 lead wouldn't make the spark you need for the boom.
