I’m not opposed to them at all however if the government tells businesses that they must make their technology easy to repair that’s a clear overstepping of power. I should be able to make technology that’s totally impossible to repair if I choose to and I should have the right to pay my money for that technology if I want.
I had to think about this for a bit, but I am starting to fall into your line of thinking. I was wondering if respect for private property could be extended to corporations or perhaps why not. The whole thing always comes down to is either you are okay with allowing others to tell you what to do with your property or not.
With respect to corporations, this means that:
- We can allow people to tell corporations what they can do with property they own. If we allow this, then ANYONE can tell corporations what they can do with their property. One year it might be us, the next year it might be communists. Who exactly can tell others what to do with their property and do these people now need a set of laws to control HOW THEY tell others what to do with their property?
This means that if we want to start a company just for white people others will be able to tell us what to do with our property.
- We simply get out of the way and allow people to do what they want with their own property - we disallow people from being able to tell others what to do with their property. This is simple, people just buy what they want and they select the winner.
This also means that if we want to create a company just for white people others cannot tell us what to do with our property.
I think just making sure that contracts are enforced and that the playing field is level is probably the best that we can do.
I hate that Apple and Microsoft are winners and I hate that the world is not run on Lisp Machines. But, consumers made the choices they made (and the various vendors played unfair and dirty, sure) and the rest of us suffer. We do now have a fully repairable laptop coming to the market, we have one very open phone (pinephone) in the marketplace and the Liberm 5 is starting to ship.
I just don't see how ANYONE can force Apple tell them what to do with their property. No one is forcing people to buy Apple.
Yeah, the fact that iFixit pushes so hard that Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are in favor of 'Right to Repair' is sus.
You have a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Beyond that, vote with your dollars. Did you tear your touchID while trying to do a screen swap? Did you break FaceID by not being careful enough? Tough shit, buy an Android next time if you're that hung up about it.
At least, that's how I feel.
You clearly don't understand the issue at hand. It's not about ease of access. It's about any legal access. I don't even want to bother explaining this. It's been like a solid decade since this was a mainstream issue. You should be well versed in it. Go read some articles from the EFF or something. Jesus.
Unbunch your panties. The issues that Louis kept bringing up were a lack of parts and technical diagrams so those were what I also mentioned. If there’s real issues then maybe advocates should mention them instead of bringing up non-issues like Louis or just telling people to “educate themselves” like wannabe SJWs.
There are no reasonable arguments that can be made to force / tell someone what to do with their property. EFF and Stallman can write all they want about the moral and political positions on this, but you cannot square private property rights with any argument against property rights. The GPL exist because of the very principle of property rights.
Either we all have property rights and we all get punished for infringing on property rights or all of us are slaves to those around us.
There is no way around this.
You reeeally don't understand the issue here.
