Back in my day, the only soldiers who got to complain were the cooks. And you listened because listening to a complaining cook is better than eating MREs.
They've basically been lowering standards of discipline for the last 15 years-ish. From what I hear these days you get to have phones/internet, eat junk food, blah blah all the things that you're not supposed to be able to during basic training.
