Even if it didn't immediately die, couldn't it scare it off. I know if I was running at something and then felt an immense amount of pain, I may decide to run away from the thing I am running at.
Also, I saw that Russian bear video where it slowly eats the guy for a half hour. I'd prefer it only slowly kill me for 8 minutes.
