I did some practical exercises on my own and found it was much faster to get out and use then say, brass knuckles (though obviously less portable). A good hit in the temple could kill someone, so beware of that. If someone tried to block (like if they thought you were throwing a punch), the sap breaking their wrist/forearm would probably be the result. But yeah I've never had formal training on it either.
