Accidental spill of black paint next to it. Then people drive through paint which gets all over rainbow.
We need a better word than "rainbow" since it has black and brown and other sickening pastels.

I got one near me. This might actually happen.
If you drive over it regularly, rig something up that can spill/spray a relatively small amount of black paint onto the road before or on it. It won't be any identifiable event, but it will relatively quickly be covered in black paint.
A windshield washer mechanism is a very simple thing to manipulate/replace.
