Best alternate power generation we'd have the tech level for right now would be solar power platforms in geostationary orbit beaming the power to selected terrestrial collection points. We could have a pilot program up in ten years. Work on Fusion and Zero Point Energy tech in the meantime, along with Fuel Cell tech, and maybe we'd never need to launch an entire system if one of those pans out sooner than expected.
