I had no idea that we were so mighty and advanced a species that we could now build a facility so stable that it could withstand a 9.1 or greater earthquake without breaking in multiple places.

Knocked people off their feet, lasted minutes. Ever heard of Fukushima? Caused a tsunami that sent ten-meter tidal waves that just rolled around and around town, pretty much plowing and scouring every structure off the land that stood before them. Overwhelmed the dikes that had been thoughtfully placed around the power plant, which had been built in what was considered a reasonably safe place.
