Guy wanted to make synthesizer before electronics. Generated frequencies with gear-like discs and magnetic pickup near teeth. Amplifiers didn't exist so he had to use big room-filling discs and magnets, to generate powerful signals to directly drive speaker. Wasn't practical. Years later Hammond organ used same technique but had amplifiers so it could be a small mechanism.
