That was a shitty cheap garbage LA curved palm, like 99% LA crappy palm.
2,600 species of palm trees exist, and of those , 200 would be similar for use as tall self-cleaning ornamentals. self cleaning (shedding) is not common though. LA chose the shittiest choice of palm though, but at least they do not need lots of water.
Its not the curving LA trees fault though, that shitty species wants to be closer to equator.
The first time you ever visit Los Angeles and already familiar with seeing palms elsewhere... you are amazed at how every goddamned LA palm is bent and arced to face sunrise sunset path.

Other cities use straight vertical palms, but many of those need constant pruning of lower leaves.
