i have had the thought lately of how mass produced items rely, not just afford, many-operations fabrication style.. usually using lots of features.. in order to compete globally. the thinking is: make the biggest order so the many operations become less cumbersome than if a smaller industrial plant tried.
todays technology has to overcome exactly this in order for peace to be possible for many people across the planet
Subtractive manufacturing requires a ton of steps. Additive manufacturing can all be done in one go and lends itself well to small part runs. Additionally, large part runs are often meant to supply disposable goods. If goods are designed to last, then small production runs can meet supply needs.
You still have secondary operations like honing, taping and milling to be done.
To get to the quality for many goods it would take more expensive heavy power tools
