They keep calling these things coffins but then, the boxes never have a body. Who spends that much care making a coffin and then not use it? https://youtu.be/d8Ejf5etV5U
Good point.
Also, if it was for a ruler or some high level person wouldn't they use the same technology to engrave the name into the stone? Wouldn't every stone box be similarly engraved? So on the few that have inscriptions why switch to crude chisels and crude lettering? So, yeh, I'm not buying the coffin theory.
So what were the boxes for? Religion? Why buries their religion that deep underground? It's like you are going to tell your people you've made dozens of high tech stone boxes and hidden them underground for shits and giggles. Now bow down and worship. Nope, that doesn't work either.
I'm thinking we're not getting a complete picture because the technology has been taken away for metals or material.
Think of it like this: You drop a aircraft into the jungle that's loaded with primitive spear throwers. They start stripping it for bits of metal until all that's left is the frame.
Later explorers who are just a bit more advanced some and ponder over the bits left and try to figure out what this strange sculpture means. Oh, obviously it's an object of worship.
