Essentially if it's a thunderstorm keep moving until you're inside shelter or a vehicle. Hiding under a tree or lying down aren't very good ideas. I'll leave it as an exercise for you to lookup the science behind why that is the case.

Never use a cliff or rocky overhang for shelter.

Any idea what the rationale is for that? Is it that it might collapse?

Yes, actually. Crouching and standing on the balls of your feet to minimize contact with the ground.
