The fusion was likely before we split and we both had 23. Which does push it back between 500k and 5 million when we diverged from chimp ancestors.

Could very well be the reason for the divergence. Although I also read that the fusion would not necessesarily make the first or offspring unable to breed with non fused.

Which blows the whole impossibly unlikely to happen naturally argument out the window. Especially given other animals have done the same thing.
