Friend of mine used to know a mechanic who did something cool. He rigged up a little circuit so that unless you pressed some inconsequential small button on the car (I think it was the aircon) 5 times within 5 seconds of starting the engine it'd turn off again. Very simple security, but it'd take a thief hours to work out.

That's what a kill switch is. The simplest one is just a toggle switch to the ignition system that you hide somewhere non-obvious. Almost no thief would bother looking for it as that could take hours to find.

I'm pretty sure it was gas. A diesel fuel won't ignite that way. The entire point of calling gas gas is that it gives off a vapor that is ignitable, whereas diesel requires compression or at minimum wicking.

Definitely gas, evidenced by the explosion on ignition and the way it spreads. Also, I think the fire was started by the sparks created from the tireless wheel scraping on the pavement. Sparks don't ignite diesel as easily as gasoline.

Diesel doesn't require compression when exposed to open flame. The difference between gasoline and Diesel in that scenario is that gasoline ignites explosively whereas Diesel is more slow, like charcoal starter.

Not shifting, but the person driving the car being too stupid to stop in anything but a "no gas to stop push peddle stop more" car. Go watch some dashcam videos. The crashes from Europe end up being 60% women whose cars look like they have a brick on their accelerators for the last few seconds of their rides.
