most houses have natural gas furnaces...it's cheaper than electric, so no brainer in general...furnaces require electricity...get the point?
so yeah, demand for electricity increased as the temps go real cold and the furnaces not rated to really keep up with such temperatures struggled...simple math that was ignored by the grid operators when than had plenty of advance notice this polar vortex was coming
They could've produced their own electricity by burning fuel. Aggregates aren't that expensive and you get even more out of them if you burn diesel.
