They deserved every bit of it. Sleeping in the open ground, unprotected and no security on duty with their own night vision scopes, ya, I've no sympathy. It would have made far more sense to dig in and set up a watch using about 1/4th of the men to take shifts. Also, not having at least a few of the same types of equipment means they were outgunned.
Of course your enemy will strike when you are most vulnerable. That's just a given in warfare.
