That's not true. Many animals do things just for fun. Crows and parrots, dolphins, dogs, certain monkeys and apes. Humans do things just for fun. The most arrogant thing in the world is people thinking they're separate from nature instead of part of nature. Fun isn't a purely human concept.

play is still practice (puppies play fight just as kids wrestle: it is all fun, but it is training and practice). It can be fun, but it is fun for a reason--like sex.

nothing is fun for the sake of fun. It kind of made me sad when I learned whales breaching was not for fun, but served to knock off parasites (like this is fun, but it serves to knock of (((parasites)) ).

Sure, fair enough. Do you suppose that when a human plays vidya they feel like they are practicing or engaging in entertainment? Do you think a lion cub playing with its siblings is aware that it's practicing hunting or does it even understand the concept of training? I think there's a natural inclination to play, and practice is a byproduct of that.

sure--from the standpoint of the concious being they are doing it soley for the sake of fun, but know we are getting into apples and oranges.

vidya, as I poorly quote some user, is addictive because it has frequent easily accomplished [reletive to say, doing it IRL] goals that are accomplished--and then there are things like the joy of exploration and mastery of the world: these play off of existing thing in real life and relate to either practice or a bastardization of reality--like jacking off to porn ("bad" fun).

From an evolutionary point of view fun is just a reward mechanism for a behavior that increases survival chances. Fun in and of itself is not a virtue or an end but rather a means to an end. Fun can drive you to expend energy wisely and hone your skills regularly but If you've ever been to pornhub you know that it can actually be counter productive to the survival of your genes when a reward mechanism is exploited.
