It's donating to something you enjoy, so that it can continue, it's appreciation for the hard work they're doing.

Have you ever tried something like this, it's a LOT of work. I'm getting my channel together for my sailing adventures and filming, editing, setting up social media, working to get sponsorships, etc. My gaming channel, now retired, was easily a 30 hour a week job, on top of a regular 40 hour week, and it was only 2 vids a week.

Nothing stopping you from trying it out with a hobby you have. If you get lucky it can be a good source of a little side income.

"Superchats" or their equivalent on any streaming services are just currency for dopamine dealers.

The "famous omg so cool" streamers are the dopamine dealers. They make people feel like they're not alone at first, and it's comforting to watch/listen to someone playing/doing something you're into. But soon, like with all drugs, just watching isn't enough- you're not getting the same dopamine, the same feeling of comfort from just watching. You must engage.

But why would super-famous streamer ever acknowledge you? You're just you after all, nobody special, not a super special streamer. But, if you give your favorite streamer $25, you can send them a message that everyone watching will see! And he might even read it out loud, and most importantly.... YOUR FAVORITE SUPER FAMOUS STREAMER MIGHT SAY YOUR NAME!! Omg you've been noticed! Out of the thousands of viewers, you got a call out from the streamer!! DOPAMINE HEAVEN YEAHHHH BABY!!

That's not enough, eventually. Despite giving your favorite streamer hundreds of dollars, you don't have any real personal connection to him. You want to be friends, you want to be able to show the entire internet that [insert streamer] knows and likes you. So a competition between viewers begins- who can impress senpai the most? How do you do that? By throwing absurd amounts of money at them, of course.

I am perplexed by the trend also.

The donator-streamer paradigm is bizarre. My kids are into Dream and I watched him play Minecraft while people are sending him money to just play a fucking video game.

I think we have failed our children. They are so desperate for interaction that they have to pay someone to validate their existence. The short time some streamer spends reading out their donation is the closest thing to praise these kids get from people. We went from the "participation trophy" society to "just ignore them and let the internet raise them" society in a heart beat.
