This is fucking scary.
This is part of the reason people have been moving out of the cities and suburbs back to the small towns, especially if they have family in some of them.
Oh look there are a few farms and ranches over there we're not going to starve and the town runs on well water...
Grow a garden and learn to hunt if you can't store up a lot of food. I'm already seeing the prices going up in my local super markets, Sam's Club & Costco.
Plus its now much easier for guys to take tech contracts and live in small areas. So they can live & work cheaper while still doing the job remotely. The boomer managers are finally realizing its cheaper to do it that way.
You just perfectly described my exact situation. I recently moved out of my insanely expensive city home for the exact reason you described. Yep, I now have a well, septic, generator, multiple refrigerators, big pantry and will build a green house this spring. I believe the old term was a victory garden. I'm even planning to get chickens.
