You need to keep in mind that a typical couple like this will never be approved for "traditional" housing loans, and are very unlikely to ever have enough money for a deposit on something half decent.

I have spend considerable time in an off grid shipping container house. That thing is pretty bloody solid and does not rest on borrowed land.
There isn't a one size fits all with tis type of house.
