Grew up with a wood stove insert. Those things throw MASSIVE heat per unit of wood. Much harder to cook on/in though...that's where a fireplace is better. Exposed stoves like the one in the video are a good mix if you have a spot on top to cook on.

Either way, when the power goes out in the middle of winter, and the natgas stops flowing, having one of those is an absolute necessity. And of course, be close to woods plus an axe and a splitting maul so you have lots of fuel.
