Yes, it's a big chunk of land, but let's do the math. 242,000 acres divided by 640. That's the number of acres in a square mile. The result is 378 square miles. That's a square parcel of land a little less than 19.5 miles on each side. It's not really as big a deal as the article says it is. There are quite a few larger farms and ranches in the US that are more than 20 miles from one boundary to another.
Of course his acreage is not in one contiguous parcel, it's scattered across several states..
Land is a good stable place to park cash. It usually doesn't have a large ROI, but it rarely depreciates and it's not going anywhere.
Yeah, it's click bait. I think the more important aspect is his overall plan rather than the amount of land. Also, I didn't know about "Senomyx" until I saw it in the comments.
And, we might consider given his track record, this land will not be used for our benefit. This asshat wants to now try to control the amount of sunlight the Earth recieves? WCGW?
Honestly i see it more as a Bloomberg move. Bloomberg famously bought up all the advertising space on TV and resold it back to the dems as a way to control who could have political ads launched. Same here, Gates will most likely sell the land at a discount price to liberal governors for FEMA camps, installment camps, or even tax free deals where the land is homesteaded and allowed to be lived in by super rich elites
Why are we assuming it's all viable Farmland. Not a lot of land is farmable.
My mom's BF has a section. 640 acres. 5 mile driveway. The county is 10,000 sq mi with 8 sheriff's total.
This actually makes quite a bit of sense.
