Was it really a mishap, or did they just like the sound from the talkback mic? Maybe I’m mixing up my studio lore.

I don't know, but it is my favorite studio effect. Drums without gated reverb sound so flat and lifeless. I always add at least a little gated reverb when I do musical tinkering for fun.
