I see them like the facebook of it's day. They appear to provide you a benefit but they're really there to do nothing but collect data, sell it, and then sell you the results from their partners and advertisers.
BTW, IIRC, there is a right wing equivalent but I don't recall the organization's name.
All of those old people clubs are just scam and spam wrapped up with shit-colored ribbon.
Ohio has one called the Golden Buckeye Club. It's nothing more than a lock-in program in disguise, and it even states that one of the benefits to the partner organizations is "In return cardholders become loyal and faithful customers."

Discounts is primarily the advantage. They add up if you're not just sitting home.
From what I know of them that sounds like a very apt description.
