Modified mRNA is old news. The problem with mRNA is that the immune system doesn't like it. They replaced molecules so that the RNA still works inside the ribosomes but the immune system doesn't recognize it as RNA anymore.
People who care about gene therapy (not stuff that contains genes, but stuff that changes genes) should look at adenoviruses (viral vector vaccine, AstraZeneca for example). Adenoviruses are used to modify DNA to cure hereditary diseases.
