Sputnik V uses two modified Adeno viruses to carry the mRNA payload for the spike protein into the cells. It is virus based, but it is not the SARS-COV-2 virus itself. I'm not sure about the mechanisms used by Covaxin.

It is. It just uses a viral vector to insert the mRNA just like the J&J vaxx. Sputnik actually uses two different modified Adeno viruses where the J&J uses only one. I think the two modified Adeno viruses are use independently though where one shot is virus A and the second shot is virus B. They use the Adeno viruses because they can easily infect cells and then modify their genetics to include the mRNA payload to corrupt your immune system with.
